What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a hand-painting hair colour technique designed to create soft, natural-looking lightness through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.

Unlike traditional highlights, balayage is applied freehand rather than wrapped tightly in foils. This allows our colourists to place brightness exactly where it will flatter your haircut, face shape and natural hair movement.

The result is a beautiful blend from darker roots into lighter lengths, creating dimension and softness while avoiding harsh regrowth lines.

Balayage can be created in a wide variety of shades, from soft blondes and warm caramels to richer brunettes, coppers or even subtle fashion tones.

Balayage V Highlights

While both techniques involve lightening the hair, the overall effect is quite different.

Traditional highlights are applied from root to tip, often using foils to create an even, all-over brightness throughout the hair.

Balayage, on the other hand, focuses mainly on the mid-lengths and ends. This allows your natural root colour to blend softly into lighter tones, creating a more lived-in finish that grows out naturally.

Many clients choose balayage because it allows more time between appointments while still keeping the hair looking fresh and bright.

If you are unsure which technique is best for you, our colour specialists will guide you during your consultation.

Blonde Balayage

Blonde balayage remains one of the most popular services at our Leeds hair salon.

Our team uses professional Wella blonding products to carefully lift the hair while protecting its condition. This allows us to create beautifully clean blondes ranging from soft honey and golden tones through to cooler beige, platinum or icy blondes.

Balayage works beautifully on many base colours:

  • Brunette hair can be enhanced with caramel, toffee or warm golden balayage.
  • Blonde hair can be brightened with lighter ribbons of platinum or cool beige tones.
  • Red or copper hair can be refreshed with tonal copper balayage for added depth and movement.

Every colour is fully customised to complement your skin tone, haircut and lifestyle.

The Money Piece

The 'money piece' is another name for face framing highlights - specifically, the two strands either side of your face. If you want to brighten the blonde balayage around your face, then opting for a blonde money piece is a great way to frame your face with lightness.

At Headfirst Hairdressers in Leeds, we can create beautiful balayage using fun fashion hair colours, too. This includes the money piece! Why not try out a pop of colour with a bright pink money piece or even a pastel hair colour?

You could also try a fashion balayage hair colour like silver-grey balayage or deep purple balayage. Whatever hair colour you would like your balayage to be, we will create at our Leeds hair salon.

Maintaining Your Balayage

One of the benefits of balayage is its softer regrowth, but maintaining tone and shine between appointments helps keep the colour looking fresh. At Headfirst, we often recommend:

Toners

A professional toner refreshes the tone of your balayage, helping to maintain cool blondes, neutral shades or warmer golden tones. This is especially useful if colour begins to appear brassy or dull over time.

Shine Treatments

Glossing or shine treatments add incredible light reflection while refreshing colour. These treatments also help improve hair condition and smoothness.

Professional Haircare

Using professional products at home helps protect your colour and maintain shine between visits.

Our stylists will always recommend the best approach for your hair type and colour.
